A conservatory can be the finishing touch that extends your living space without much hassle. With a variety of possible uses and the opportunity to have a space brings the outside in – a conservatory is definitely something you might have considered installing at some point. You may have set back your conservatory dream when you thought to yourself: ‘do I need planning permission for this?’ No need to worry, our guide will hopefully clarify this for you!
Does a conservatory require planning permission?
Luckily for you and every other homeowner in England, a conservatory is considered to be a permitted development, meaning it doesn’t need an application for planning permission. However, there are limits to this. A conservatory will need planning permission if it doesn’t meet the following requirements:
-No more than half the area of land around the original house.
-Must not be forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway.
-Must not be higher than the highest part of the house’s roof.
-If it’s a rear extension it must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres (attached house) or four metres (detached house)
-If it’s a rear extension, the height must not exceed four metres.
-The maximum eaves and ridge height of the extension must be no higher than that of the existing house.
So, now you should know how to avoid any planning permission complications when it comes to installing a conservatory. A good installation company will do their best to work with you to ensure your conservatory installation won’t cause you any trouble further down the line by ensuring everything is legally sound.
You might also be asking yourself: ‘what kind of conservatory should I get?’ Well, that’s entirely dependant on your personal taste and space needs. Absolutely brilliant from beginning to end – amazing fitters – two windows and patio sliding doors – great company to deal with – thank you.
Our hardworking team has recently completed a project fitting Deceuninck flush sash windows at the front and back of a beautiful property in St Albans.
The white flush sash windows that appear at the front of the property, on Brampton Road, feature aged leads in the fanlights and the windows at the back are from the Deceuninck Colour Express Range in anthracite grey.
This superior flush sash window range is available in 26 different colours and comes with an A+ energy efficiency, helping you to save money on your heating bills.
Our virtually maintenance free uPVC windows in white were also fitted at the side and in the loft of the home.
Clearly very happy with the outcome, Marcus and Ania emailed us with their thoughts:
“Just a quick email to say thank you for the windows. They’re great quality and look absolutely fantastic, and we’ve had lots of compliments on them.
Feel free to send any potential buyers around if they want to see any onsite work or get a reference.”

Ben was excellent in assisting us to choose the right windows, guiding us through the different options available and understanding our requirements for a 1930s house. He delivered ahead of schedule and the fitting was excellent. One minor production fault was noted and corrected very quickly and the windows look fantastic. Real high quality at a fantastic price. We did a lot of comparisons and some came in at 3x the price we paid and I didn’t see the difference in quality, nor was the customer service matched. Highly recommend Budget Windows.
We needed new windows in our Victorian house as the original ones were incredibly draughty and no longer opened properly. Our priority was to get efficient modern windows which were in keeping with the style of the property. Tony at Budget Windows put a great deal of effort into advising us and designing our windows. The fitters were really tidy and trustworthy and we are thrilled with the results.
Putting your house on the market is a big decision, whether you are moving to the other side of the world or just down the road. You will already have the stresses of buying your next house so you want to make sure that selling your existing house goes as smoothly as possible. One way to help the process is by making some changes to your home. These will no doubt make your property far more appealing to buyers and the quicker someone makes an offer, the quicker you can move into your new home.
The true pleasure of a conservatory comes in summer when it’s comfortable to sit in the safety of our homes, reading or socialising, while warm summer breezes waft through the open doors and windows bringing the natural perfumes of the flowers and the gentle smoky tang of the barbecue to our noses?
Summer has certainly been here this year. It has definitely been the right time to say goodbye to dark and grim cloudy skies and bone-chilling cold, and welcome the warm rays of the sun.
